The Everglades is a wetland, where we rowed in canoes on the lakes of water so black and so clear, that you would get confused what was up and what was down.
We were in a group of 13 people in 6 canoes, without a guide.
We slept in a tent in the forest. Alone. With nothing but the tent between us and the goannas!
Our guide had warned us, that the goannas did not fear us, and they would get really close.
Yet nothing had prepared me for what happend that morning.
"Ditte? Ditteeee! DITTE!!?"
"What is it Martin?" I asked him sleepily.
"It's a goanna! There's a goanna right outside our tent, and it's trying to get in!"
Suddenly I was wide awake. I sat up and turned my head to wear he was pointing and I could see it's claws when it was trying to make the small hole in the tent bigger.
"Get away!!!" he screamed at it, but it just came back.
Soon both of us were screaming and hitting the side of the tent with shoes, but it refused to go away.
"Help! There's a goanna right outside our tent!"
We could hear the other campers waking up and whispering all around us.
"Relax." someone said close by. "It's just a bush turkey..."
Martin and I shared a look, before we opened the tent and ran out after the turkey, laughing.
The eventful morning was followed by a loooooong paddle tour followed by a loooooong walk to a sand dune.
After about half an hours resting at the sand dunes, we had to go all the way back!

Dinner was made like this:
And it tasted alright despite the sight of it...
